My Friendship With You Will Never Die

From Hone's Everyday Book (1826)

I’ve watched you grow up,
As did you,
From the very beginning,
Since we were kids.
It’s hard for me to believe we’re older now,
We’re now seen as young adults.
No matter how old we are,
Or how far apart we are,
My friendship with you will never die.
Not only are you a very good friend towards me,
You’re like an older brother I never had…
And one I’ve always wanted.

Some of the things that I like about you,
Is that you don’t judge before you act;
When I needed a shoulder to cry on,
You were there when I needed someone to talk to,
Through all the bad times that I had during my childhood;
Whenever I wanted help,
You were there to give me the best advice;
And if I was having a terrible day,
You were there to cheer me up.
And I’m glad that you’re different from everyone else,
You’re one of a kind just like me.
Now that we’re miles away,
And on our own,
I think about you as much and as often as possible
Without being obsessive over it.
I miss you that much.

My friendship with you will never die,
And neither will my memories of you.
When you come home,
It will be my turn to be there for you.
We grew up together you and I.
We moved and distance was our enemy.
We turned the years to our prime.
We are brother and sister.

When I cried, your shoulder was wet.
When I talked, you were my tree.
When I strayed, you pointed the way.
When I hurt, you took my pain away
When others judged me, you knew me.

Brother, the winds are filled with you.
You rustle my leaves, I am your tree.
My friendship with you will never die.
