5K Walk on Oct. 7 Is in Observance of Disability Employment Awareness Month

A free, public event is planned for Saturday, Oct. 7, to provide area residents with information on the contributions and skills of workers with disabilities and resources available for those with disabilities. The centerpiece of the day is a 5-K Disabilities Awareness Walk starting and ending on the College of Menominee Nation campus, N172 State Highway 47/55 in Keshena.

The walk is under the sponsorship of the Menominee Vocational Rehabilitation Program (MVR) and the Menominee Tribal Clinic's Diabetes, Diabetes Prevention and Wellness Programs. The event includes a variety of information booths on programs and services, refreshments, and prizes for walkers and other attendees. Walkers will register at 8:30 a.m. near the College’s Cultural Learning Center for the 9 a.m. to 12 noon walk. Information booths will be open for visitors throughout the morning. Tribal entities are sponsoring the event but participation in the walk and information fair is open to everyone.

“This will be the third time the walk has been held. We’re happy to be part of the National Disabilities Awareness Month effort and glad to be sharing information on the talents, strengths, and skills that people with disability have,” says Myrna Warrington. Warrington is an MVR Director and organizer of this year’s walk. “The MVR program’s goal is to help Native Americans who have disabilities and who live within a 30-mile radius of the Menominee Reservation prepare for employment. The Menominee Clinic and other area providers and vendors that have similar goals will be joining us on Oct. 7 to talk with people about their services for those who are disabled.”

Information on the rain-or-shine Disabilities Awareness Walk is available from 715-799-6226, ext. 3203. A PDF map of the walk course and more information on the event may be seen here.
