INTERNSHIP SUMMARY AND DESCRIPTION
The College of Menominee Nation (CMN) Sustainable Development Institute (SDI), Pennsylvania State University (Penn State), Portland State University (PSU), and North Carolina State University (NCSU) are leading the collaborative project, “Visualizing Forest Futures (VIFF): How biodiversity and human values shape decision making under climate change.” The project seeks four (4) undergraduate student researchers to be involved in technology development and interdisciplinary research about climate change.
Students will be supported by CMN/ SDI and will be learning about developing virtual reality applications to help guide decision-making for forest management practices and facilitate adaptation to climate change drivers. Students will work with 360 video and graphics to create content for the software application environment on the Oculus VR headsets. Students will get feedback from local community members on the effectiveness of the VR simulations while gathering various feedback on the natural environment and their personal experiences. The interviews will become an optional listening component of the Oculus app, where the user can either choose to listen to the natural sound of the sites, or enjoy them with the addition of the interviews from Menominee elders. The intent of this component is to capture authentic voices revealing their personal connections to the sites, so that these oral histories are documented. Furthermore, it is important to synthesize Menominee oral storytelling tradition with modern technologies. Research will be used to 1) examine possible impacts of climate change on forest systems and 2) elicit values about forest change, including changes in both cultural and environmental resources.
INTERNSHIP LEARNING OBJECTIVES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Responsibilities include:
- Learn different aspects of content and software application development in the virtual reality environment.
- Collect digital audio, videos and images to develop a virtual reality experience.
- Work within a team environment and individually to carry out assigned tasks.
- Develop and present overview of internship experience to CMN and broader Community.
- Perform other identified tasks in support of the project.
- Must be registered or currently enrolled in six (6) or more credits
- Must be a degree-seeking student enrolled at the College of Menominee Nation or other accredited College or University. (Certain documentation may be required to confirm enrollment status.)
- Must have completed at least one (1) semester of study
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better on a 4.0 scale
- Internship must be related to student academic degree program

TIMEFRAME AND STIPEND:
Timeframe: The internship is scheduled to begin February 8, 2021 and run through July 31, 2021. Internships are compensation via stipend. This position will not exceed the amount of $8250. During the semester, it is requested that the intern schedule does not conflict with their academic schedule. The internship may be extended or hours adjusted based on student availability, interest, and funding.
