Attending a Career Fair

Career fairs are a great way to meet employers and get a head start on positions available. Employers participate in job fairs because they want to meet and hire participants. 

Benefits of Attending:

  • Ask any questions about the jobs
  • Learn about what jobs you may be interested in
  • Demonstrate skills and enthusiasm for positions

 What To Bring, Wear, & Ask

It's okay to feel nervous about attending a job fair. Below is information to help you prepare to make the most of your experience. 

What to Bring
  • List of references 
  • Work History 
  • Pens to fill out any paperwork/job applications
  • Copies of your resume to handout 
  • Professional folder to hold your resumes and any paper for notetaking

Resume Tips: 

  1. Make sure your email and contact information is professional (no swear words, inappropriate nicknames) 
  2. Only include most recent 10-15 years of information 
  3. Match the language in your resume to the type of job descriptions that you are interested in. 
What to wear

Formal clothes are best for this type of setting, dress how you would for a job interview. 

Examples: 

  • Dress pants & dress shirts, such as a collared shirt with long sleeves, blazer, or knit sweater, Shirt and tie
  • Comfortable shoes with closed toes
  • Blouse, or skirt
  • Business Suit 
  • Simple colors like shades of black, blue, gray, white, brown, green, pale yellow, and light tones of purple

What to avoid: 

  • Jeans
  • Ripped clothes
  • Chunky large bracelets, or large jewelry
  • Wrinkled clothes
  • Wearing perfume or cologne-Some people could be allergic 
  • Disheveled, unkempt hair 
  • Heavy makeup 
Questions you can ask
  • "On a typical day, what does someone in this role do?" 
  • "What kind of skills and experience do you look for in the employees you hire?"
  • "What is the biggest challenge employees can solve in this position?"
  • "Who is the manager for this role?"
  • "How long have you been at ________(Company)?"
  • "What is your favorite thing about the job?"
  • "What does growth and development look like at ____________ (Company)?"
  • "What type of person is most successful at _______ (Company)?"
  • "Diversity is really important to me. How do you support different identities?"
  • "Will there be a lot of travel for this position?"
  • "What kind of culture is there around feedback at _____(Company)?"
  • "How do people like to give and receive feedback?"
  • "What is the one thing that most surprised you about this company?"
  • "How can I follow up about this role?"

Important Tips

  • Prepare a 30 second elevator speech. 
    • Imagine you are in an elevator with a potential supervisor, and they ask you to tell them about yourself. What would they like to know? 
    • When you go up to the employer tables, you can introduce yourself, hand them your resume, express your interest, summarize your qualifications, emphasizing what is unique about you, and explain why you are interested in the position(s). This can be a good way to start a conversation with the employers. 
  • Think about what types of jobs you might want to look for.
