Posoh mawaw new weyak (greetings everyone),
The College of Menominee Nation is aware of the recent cyberattack on Canvas LMS provider, Instructure.
This outage affected the College of Menominee Nation, along with thousands of institutions across the country. It is important to know that the College of Menominee Nation was not the direct target of this attack, but we are indirectly affected in our use of the Canvas platform.
CMN does not directly surface any personally identifiable information to Canvas, and there is no indication that passwords, financial information, or other identifiers (SSN, Date of Birth) have been compromised.
There is some indication that the following information may have been obtained by malicious actors:
- Details submitted to Canvas through Empower, such as student names, student IDs, and email addresses, and enrolled courses
- Any communications transmitted through Canvas itself, such as messages between students and faculty/instructors
We ask that students and faculty remain patient as Instructure works to navigate the impact of their outage. At this time, we have received an "all clear" from Instructure and believe Canvas to be accessible again for students and faculty.
Most importantly, we ask students and faculty to remain vigilant and exercise caution regarding potential phishing attempts, and to be cautious of unexpected emails or messages that appear to come from CMN officials, requesting login credentials or personal information. These phishing attempts may become more sophisticated as actors review potentially compromised information.
What's Next:
- If you have any questions about your course, please contact your instructor and keep an eye on your Gmail inbox.
- Use the Phish Alert reporting tool in Gmail to report suspicious emails and messages.
- MOST IMPORTANTLY, do not click links or download attachments from unfamiliar messages.
CMN understands that this is an unfortunate event in an otherwise already stressful week for students and faculty alike. We thank you for your patience, your understanding, and your flexibility as we navigate the last days of this semester.
Eneq. (that is all)
